The purpose of Welfund is 'to enable financing for under-financed sustainable assets'. Welfund will enable the adaption of rooftop solar, EV charging infrastructure and mobility, & energy efficiency.
Indian Rooftop Solar (residential & small commercial) rooftop segment has ~400GW untapped potential lacking access to finance, whereas India has installed a total of 6.64GW as of 31 March'22, amounting to 16.6% of the total 40GW rooftop solar target to be achieved by 2022 & 1.66% of the total rooftop solar potential in the country. Apart from structural issues hurting the growth of the sector, access to consumer financing has been another bottleneck.
Therefore, Welfund is creating a digital loan marketplace for sustainable assets focusing on solar rooftops in the 1st horizon. The marketplace will act as a common platform where registered solar installers can connect with the lenders integrated on the platform to avail the financing for their end consumer on their own feasible terms.
